tapestry weaving

Tapestry, typically worked from the bottom to the top, requires both a foundation and a vision. But even with the best laid plan, something new always occurs, and the daily anticipation of what will result is a part of the excitement I feel each day as I enter the studio.

Tapestry is both an old and a new artform, having been practiced for thousands of years, going in and out of favor. Recently it has enjoyed a glimmer of a resurgence, as weavers discover the thrill of weft-faced textiles and the potential for abstract as well as representational art pieces, and as the tapestries themselves evoke wonder and curiosity from those who encounter them.

from creative play to woven art

Utilizing a medium that is tactile and responsive, I seek to express the underlying reality of an unseen realm by playing with levels of transparency and perspective, materials and colors, representative and abstract. I rely on a sense of play to keep me grounded as I stretch my capacity in both technique and artistic vision.  In other words, I can sink into the process of tapestry weaving, decry the degree to which reality falls short of the vision, and continually toss in the towel and pick it up again. Unless, of course, I keep my sense of humor....

Because sometimes this happens . . .
